Module guide: Drag and drop documents
Non-technical user guide: what the module is for, how to use it and how it fits together with Dolibarr.
CompatibilityDolibarr 18 to 24
Configuration options3 on/off settings
Database impactNo table created
ScopeAll records with a Documents tab
1. Module overview
The "Drag and drop documents" module brings the convenience of drag-and-drop to Dolibarr records. Instead of clicking the + button, opening a window, browsing your disk and then confirming, you grab a file (or a link) and drop it straight onto a dedicated area that appears below the title of the "Attached files and documents" or "Linked files and documents" block. The document is then attached to the record in a single action.
The module replaces nothing: it simply adds a visual layer on top of Dolibarr's existing document blocks. The upload reuses Dolibarr's native form exactly as it is, along with all of its checks (security token, object identifier and type, user rights, maximum upload size, validations). No Dolibarr core file is modified, and nothing is stored anywhere other than where Dolibarr usually keeps your attachments.
- Installs as an external module and is enabled from the Dolibarr modules list
- Works everywhere a record has the "Documents" tab / block (third parties, invoices, quotations, orders, products, projects, etc.)
- Creates no table, no menu and no scheduled job: it is simply an interface enhancement
- Goes through Dolibarr's native upload forms: same rights, same limits, same security checks
- Interface available in French, English, Italian, German and Spanish, depending on the user's language
2. Drop files by drag-and-drop
On every record that has the "Attached files and documents" block, a drop area is added below the block title, with the prompt "Drag and drop your files here".
- Drag a file from your computer and release it onto the area: it is automatically attached to the record
- Dropping several files at once is supported (a message shows "Uploading X files…")
- The upload goes through Dolibarr's native upload form: the file is stored exactly where the + button would have stored it
- A progress message is displayed during the upload; if no file is detected in the drop, an error message reports it
3. Drop a link (URL) by drag-and-drop
On records that have the "Linked files and documents" block, a second drop area appears with the prompt "Drag and drop a link here", to attach a web address rather than a file.
- Drag a link (from the address bar, a bookmark, an e-mail or a web page) and drop it onto the area
- The module recognises addresses starting with http, https, ftp or mailto; an invalid address is reported with a message
- A label is picked up automatically when the dragged link includes one (the link text from the source page)
- The link is saved via Dolibarr's native links form; if it is dropped without a usable URL, a "No URL detected" message is shown
4. Click instead of dropping (fallback)
If you prefer to click, or if drag-and-drop is not convenient (tablet, missed gesture), the drop areas are also clickable.
- Clicking the file area opens the usual file picker to choose a document on your device
- Clicking the links area brings up the native field and places the cursor inside it to type the address by hand
- If your browser does not allow direct dropping, the module automatically displays the standard Dolibarr form so you can complete the operation without getting stuck
5. Keyboard accessibility
The drop areas can be used without a mouse, for people who navigate with the keyboard.
- The areas are reachable with the Tab key
- The Enter and Space keys activate the area: opening the file picker or switching to the link field
6. Visual feedback and guided messages
The module supports each action with clear visual feedback, to remove any ambiguity about what is happening.
- The area changes appearance on hover during the drag ("Release to drop")
- A success state (green outline) or error state (red outline) is shown depending on the result
- The messages (uploading, adding the link, missing file, incompatible browser…) adapt to the user's language
7. Configuration and adaptation
The module has a configuration page accessible from the modules list, with three simple switches (on / off). All are enabled by default.
- Hide the native + buttons: hides the + buttons of the files and links blocks to emphasise drag-and-drop (the native forms are still used in the background); disable this setting to bring the usual buttons back
- Automatically validate dropped links: a dropped link is saved immediately; when disabled, it is pre-filled but left for you to confirm
- Automatically validate the fallback file picker: when you go through the click and the file picker, the upload starts automatically after the file is chosen
- The configuration page reminds you that no change is made to the Dolibarr core
8. Links with Dolibarr
The module does not work in isolation: it integrates with the native building blocks of Dolibarr.
- Documents and attached files : The module attaches to the native "Attached files and documents" block found on Dolibarr records. Dropping a file uses the native upload form, so the file is stored and listed exactly as with the usual + button.
- Links / linked documents : In the same way, it relies on the native "Linked files and documents" block to attach a web address to the record, via Dolibarr's standard links form.
- Native records (third parties, invoices, quotations, orders, products, projects…) : Since it targets Dolibarr's generic document blocks, it automatically works on all records that have these blocks: third parties, invoices, quotations, orders, products, projects and other objects fitted with the Documents tab.
- Dolibarr security, rights and limits : Nothing bypasses Dolibarr: the module reuses the security token (CSRF), the object identifier and type, the user's rights and the maximum upload size defined natively. It creates no right, no table and no specific entry point.
